The city of Bettendorf is the fifteenth largest city in Iowa. It is a part of Scott County and Quad Cities metropolitan area. The population is over 33,000 according to the 2010 census. It also owns the boasting rights as one of the 100 best towns in the USA, according to CNN Money.
Bettendorf was a part of the original Wisconsin territory and has a history dating back to 1832. It consisted mainly of German immigrants looking for work. In 1900, the town gave 70 acres to the Bettendorf brothers to move their wagon business to the city, then known as Gilbert. Due to the major economic influence they had on the region, the town decided to change its name to Bettendorf from Gilbert to honor the brothers. In late 1940s, ALCOA (Aluminum Company of America) constructed the world’s largest aluminum mill close to the city in Riverdale, leading to further growth of Bettendorf and its population. Even today, Alcoa is the largest employer with about 2000 employees from the city.
Bettendorf has several riverboat casinos that operate on the Mississippi since 1991. The Isle of Capri Casinos, found by Bernard Goldstein is the second largest employer in the region and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The casino opened the Quad Cities Waterfront Convention Center in 2009 and operates it on a day to day basis. The convention center is owned by the City.
The city of Bettendorf is showing tremendous growth potential. Starting in 2012, it has undertaken a huge project for building the I-74 Bridge and has torn down a small portion of the downtown buildings. It has several schools districts, including the Bettendorf School District and Pleasant Valley School District. There are also a couple of private schools in Bettendorf, along with a community college.
The city experiences all four seasons, with hot summers and cold winters. For visitors, there is a lot to see and do in Bettendorf. The Family Museum of Arts & Science is a huge attraction for children as well as adults. The Isle of Capri Casino provides more than 1000 slot machines, video machines as well as 20 table games for those interested in gaming. The Palmer Hill Golf Course is a luxurious location for golfing in Bettendorf. The Splash Landing Aquatic is a fun destination for all families. The city also has several parks serving its residents with all modern amenities including walking trails, fountains, children playgrounds and restrooms. The city is active and organizes several events such as the 4th of July fireworks as well as several walks and runs for various causes.
