The city of Davenport in Iowa is the largest city in Scott County and the largest in the Quad Cities metropolitan area. In the past few years, its population has seen steady growth and is estimated to be over 100,000. It is located on the Mississippi River and experiences all the four seasons.
The city was founded in 1836 by Antoine LeClaire and named after his friend Davenport. Davenport is highly susceptible to flooding by the Mississippi river due to the absence of any permanent flood walls or levees. The city has seen several floods over the past years.
Today’s Davenport is booming – it has a low and declining crime rate and a very low unemployment rate. In fact, Forbes magazine has named Davenport as the most affordable metropolitan area in 2010.
The city is well connected by two national highways and the Quad City National Airport. It has two main universities, a minor league baseball team (Quad Cities River Bandits) and is home to several music festivals. The Modern Woodmen Park has been voted as the best minor league ballpark in America. Davenport is the first and only city in the US with accredited Police, Public Works, Fire, Parks and Library Departments.
For visitors, Davenport has several must see attractions. The downtown area has Davenport Skybridge, a great place to experience July 4th and New Year fireworks. It has a cultural district with several museums and theaters such as the Figge Art Museum, River music experience, Rivercenter/Adler Theater and the Putnam museum. The Quad City Symphony Orchestra is also located in the downtown area.
Davenport also has several beautiful parks. The Credit Island Park featuring a bike path, tennis courts, walking trails as well as baseball diamonds. The Vander Veer Botanical Park houses a small botanical garden, a large fountain, a lagoon and a walking path. It is common to see families enjoying their evenings at these lovely parks.
There are several activities all year-round in Davenport. Visitors can enjoy the Bix Fest in August – a music festival organized in honor of celebrated Davenport native, a composer and a pianist, Bix Beiderbecke. The Bix 7 is a 7 mile road race organized in July, where more than 15,000 runners take part. The Great Mississippi Valley Fair is an exciting event featuring carnival rides, major concerts and food stands. The diversity of events is apparent with Sturgis on the River, a large gathering of motorcycles that takes place every year. It is celebrated with many bands and different types of food. Festival of trees is a fun event for children and adults alike, organized during Christmas. Kids can see beautifully decorated trees, have snacks and get a chance to talk to Santa.
