The city of DeWitt is the fastest growing city in Clinton County, Iowa, United States. Its population was 5,322 according to the 2010 census, which is over 5% increase from the 2000 census. The city was named after DeWitt Clinton, an early US politician, who served as a senator as well as the Governor of New York. DeWitt was formed in 1841 and has a total area of about 6 square miles.
DeWitt is governed by an elected mayor and a five-member council. The mayor–council government system, sometimes called the mayor–commission government system, is one of the two most common forms of local government for municipalities in the United States.
The city is home to several schools that serve the neighboring communities. DeWitt is home to Central Community Schools of the County. Ekstrand Elementary School serves students in pre-K through grade 3. Central Intermediate School serves grades 4 through 6. Central Middle School serves grades 7 through 8, while Central High School serves grades 9 through 12. The Central High School has excelled in athletics and won state championships in both boys and girls basketball, as well as boys cross country. During 200-2001, the Saber Boys’ Cross Country team had a winning streak of 254-0 in 20 consecutive meets. The school’s mascot is the Saber, a shield, two swords, and a saber-toothed tiger.
The primary local newspaper of DeWitt is the DeWitt Observer, which also serves most of the rural eastern Clinton County. There are several celebrities that hail from DeWitt. David Hilmers, the famed NASA astronaut is a native of the city. Danny Moeller, the Major League Baseball player is also from the region. The Arkansas attorney and Republican politician Wallace Townsend was born in DeWitt.
DeWitt has many parks that serve its residents. Some of them include Ashindel Park, Forest Park, Lincoln Park, Little Trees Park, Paarman Park and Westbrook Park. The Ashindel Park is home to many flowering plants and trees and has a nice sitting area. It also has a basketball and a volleyball court, along with a walking & fitness trail. The DeWitt Fitness Center is located in the Ashindel Park. Lincoln Park is the City’s premier park. It is also known as the Water Tower Park since it is located under the city’s water tower. It includes amenities like a picnic shelter, many picnic tables, a gazebo, some playground equipment such as slides and swings as well as public restrooms. The park is also home to the DeWitt Community Center. The old Lincoln Highway runs around the park and the park is named Lincoln Park in recognition of this. The park is in an area of about 2.1 acres.
