The City of Le Claire is located in Scott County in Iowa. It is a part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area and is one of the fastest growing towns in the region. Its population has increased by almost 35% over a decade, the highest compared to any of the other Quad cities. The city has an area of about 4.9 square miles, of which 0.2 square miles is water.
There are about 1,500 households in Le Claire, home to about 3800 people according to the 2011 census. The city is served by the Pleasant Valley School District and has one district director on the seven member board of education.
Even with such a small population, Le Claire has been in the media a number of times. William Fredrick Cody, popularly known as “Buffalo Bill” was a native of Le Claire. He was a popular celebrity and well regarded for his shows highlighting the Wild West. The city is also home to the Buffalo Bill Museum, which commemorates the character and showcases memorabilia from his shows. Additionally, the museum also highlights other antique pieces of historic interest. Le Claire is also home of the TV show American Pickers. The show features Antique Archeology, which is an antique store run by Frank Fritz and the one-time Le Claire city council member, Mike Wolfe. American Pickers is a reality TV show on the History Channel.
Le Claire is also well known amongst bird lovers. It offers one of the best photography opportunities of the national bird of the US, the bald eagle, every year between December and March. The majestic birds gather at Lock and Dam 14 on the Mississippi River during their migration to catch fish, offering a glimpse into their lives. Le Claire is also well known for Tugfest, which is an annual three daylong event organized during the first part of August. This event features a rope that is stretched across from the Mississippi river from Le Claire to Port Byron. Different teams compete against each other, with each team containing 20 members. The team that pulls the most rope wins. The contest winner is the state with the most winning teams. It is a fun family event with fireworks, live bands, great food and a carnival. The event attracts hundreds of visitors every year.
The city has a number of other attractions, including tours of the Mississippi River Distilling Company, which is a micro distillery creating vodka, gin and bourbon from the locally produced grains. There are twilight riverboat cruises as well as Winery Tastings.
Le Claire has a lot to offer for its visitors and is a great place to live for its residents.
