The City of Moline in Illinois is one of the cities that make up the Quad cities metropolitan area, along with East Moline, Bettendorf, Rock Island and Davenport. It is located in the Rock Island county of Illinois and has a population of about 44,000 according to the 2010 census. It is the ninth most populated city in Illinois. It is bounded by East Moline on the east and Rock Island on the west and is about 165 miles from Chicago.
Moline is well connected by four interstate highways as well as the Quad City International airport. This has led to its healthy industrial growth as well as increase in the growth of the overall population. Moline is home to the corporate headquarters of Deere & Company, as well as Kone. Deere & Company is by far the largest employer in the city accounting for providing employment to over 6,000 people. The Moline High School District, second largest employer, provides employment to less than 1000 employees.
Moline has a rich industrial history, dating back as far as 1720. Starting with farming and fishing, the town attracted several industrial pioneers due to its abundance of water, coal and easy access to river for shipping. Once John Deere moved its headquarters to Moline in the 1848, the town saw an explosion of immigrants from Europe looking for work. The population grew by leaps and bounds and the town was well known to be a place for serious workers. Even today, Moline has seen progressive growth due to major efforts to revitalize its central business district. It is one of the civic and recreational hub of Quad Cities and is a modern town with several businesses serving the population.
There are many places for visitors to experience in Moline. John Deere Pavilion and the headquarters would be on the top of the list for any young farmers. Several tours are available at the facility, showcasing the rich history of tractors and other farm equipment. The i-wireless center is home to a number of large conventions, concerts and high school tournaments. There are several cruises that travel on the Mississippi and offer visitors scenic views of the city. There are 18 parks in the city catering to needs of the entire city. Riverside Park is home to the Riverside Family Aquatic Center. Prospect Park is home to the Quad city Music Guild. Ben Butterworth Parkway is a 4 mile long scenic trail that runs along the Mississippi river. There are several other recreational facilities in addition to the parks. The city also has its own minor league hockey and baseball teams.
